Artist Statement

I am a New Media artist and Curator based in Birmingham, UK. My artistic practice uses glitch art, hacking and technology-driven processes to explore issues surrounding Open Source Software, Free Culture and collaborative practices. I have long been a supporter of the Free Culture and Open Source movements, both of which aim to create a less restrictive creative culture by applying liberal licences to creative works and fighting overly restrictive copyright laws. Through several exhibitions, I have expressed this creatively. Examples include my first solo exhibition, Permission Taken (2015 – 2016) at Birmingham Open Media and University of Birmingham, the group exhibition Common Property (2016) at Jerwood Space, and contributions of articles and illustrations for Libre Graphics magazine (2011 – 2016).

My Curatorial practice focuses on topics synonymous with digital culture. Topics of interest include surveillance, copyright, internet neutrality, access and digital archival processes, obsolescence, hacktivism, DIY culture, and online communities. Curated exhibitions that focus on topics themes to date include fizzPOP (2009 – 2010), GLI.TC/H Birmingham (2011), TOYBOX (2012), the Birmingham editions of Bring Your Own Beamer (2012, 2013), µChip 3 (2015), and Stealth (2015). In 2017 I will deliver the No Copyright Infringement Intended exhibition at Phoenix, Leicester and Vivid Projects, Birmingham.
